Recurrence of breast cancer can occur at any time during the first three to five years after the patient has undergone initial treatment to eliminate cancer cells. In some cases, all the cancer cells can not be removed from the treated breast. Some cells remain and spread to other parts, while in some cases it comes back as a local recurrence even after treatment is completed. Cancer cells appear near the mastectomy scar or it may occur elsewhere in the body. Lymph nodes, bone, liver, or lung disease is common in some parts of the body where recurrent breast cancer.
The best way to detect breast cancer more a continuation of breast self-examination. Women who have undergone surgery or other treatments to eliminate breast cancer cells have to go for a check up of the treated breast and other breast each month.
Any change in the appearance of treated breast or other areas should be reported immediately to the doctor. Changes such as lumps or thickening of the treated breast or near the under arm to survive through the menstrual cycle or the appearance of an area such as marble under the skin are some indicators of breast cancer recurrence. If cancer cells can not be removed from the treated breast area then you may experience changes in size, shape, and contour of the breast.
In some cases of recurrence in breast cancer cells, one can see a change in the appearance of the nipple. Breast skin may become red, inflamed or swollen and the scales may begin to appear near the breast. Nipple discharge may be bloody, clear liquid. Such changes are often an indicator of breast cancer cells.
A doctor may also predict the occurrence of cancer in female patients treated after detection and tumor characteristics. This is known as a prognostic indicator. Women who have breast cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes have a greater chance of developing a deadly form of cancer anymore. Prognostic indicator of tumor size is very common. There is a higher probability of developing cancer of a female patient if she has a tumor size larger.
A doctor also detect nuclear grade to predict the patient's chance of getting cancer again. Nuclear class is the rate at which cancer cells divide to form more cells. If the patient has a cell with higher nuclear value then it is likely the cancer cell growth more in person. Similarly, cancer cells that contain oncogenes also enhance a person's chance of breast cancer recurrence.
